Entry Requirements for International Students  

Academic and Aptitude Prerequisites for Professional Courses

To ensure your success in our rigorous programmes, all international students must meet specific prerequisites, especially for the NZ Diploma in Aviation (General Aviation Level 5, Flight Instruction Level 6, or Airline Preparation Level 6) strands.

English Language

Proof of competence in spoken and written English is mandatory.

Aviation Experience

Some experience around aircraft or evidence of self-motivated efforts to educate yourself about aviation.

Cognitive Capacity

NCEA Level 3 Certificate (or equivalent) OR a pass in all CAANZ Private Pilot Licence (PPL) subjects. Please refer to the Academic Entry Requirement Guidelines for overseas equivalency.

Medical Standard

A current CAANZ Medical Certificate Class 1 is required. You must present this to NAC before commencing training. See Medical section for designated examiners.

Fit and Proper Person

Required by the CAA of New Zealand. Provide up-to-date Criminal Conviction and Transport Offence history from any country you have lived in for more than six months in the last five years.

Aptitude Testing

Must achieve a Medium, Above Average, or High result in the ADAPT© Pre-screening Online Assessment.

English Language Exemptions & Equivalency  

Achieved NCEA level 3 and has met New Zealand university entrance requirements; or,
Been awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma; or,
Cambridge A-level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English; or,
Been awarded the Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or the Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL); or,
Achieved, within the two years preceding the proposed date of enrolment, one of the internationally recognised proficiency test outcomes specified in the attached table, for the level of the programme in which the student is enrolling.

Alternative Prior Schooling English Level Equivalence
Prior schooling completed in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu and the United States, taught using English as the language of instruction, may be used as alternative equivalence, provided the completion of one of the following:
All primary education (equivalent of New Zealand primary school years 1 to 8) and at least three years of secondary education (equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13); or,
A minimum of five years of secondary education (equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13); or,
A Bachelor’s Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree.

Note for PPL Courses: There are no academic entry requirements for a Private Pilot Licence course. However, English as a second language students must achieve a minimum overall IELTS score of 5.5, with no subpart below 5.0, to hold a NZ CAA PPL licence.
