The Nelson Arts Festival brings together music, theatre, comedy, performances and other creative events across the city.

It is also a good way to experience a side of New Zealand that you probably will not see from an aircraft.

Grab a few friends from the college, pick something that looks interesting and head into town.

You do not need to know anything about theatre or the arts. Half the fun is discovering something completely new.

Coppermine Bike Festival

Nelson Tasman is a pretty good place to be if you like bikes.

The Coppermine Bike Festival is held around Coppermine Saddle and is another opportunity to get out and experience the region rather than spending your entire weekend studying aviation theory.

The wider Nelson Tasman region has an extensive network of mountain biking and cycling trails, so there is plenty to explore whether you are seriously into riding or just fancy giving it a go.

And if you have spent the week sitting in a classroom or aircraft, getting outside is probably not a bad idea.

For international students, events like this are a good opportunity to meet people outside your usual group and get involved in the local community.

You might be arriving in New Zealand primarily to become a pilot, but getting involved in things happening around you is a big part of making the most of your time here.

Go exploring

The best thing about learning to fly in Nelson might not actually be an organised event.

It might be having a free Saturday and deciding to see where you end up.
