Learning to Fly in New Zealand: Things to Do in Nelson Tasman This Spring

September 18, 2026

Here are some fantastic things to do this spring while studying in Nelson Tasman.

There is obviously a lot to think about when choosing where to do your flight training. The quality of the training, the flying environment, the aircraft and your pathway into the aviation industry all matter.

But there is another question worth asking:

What are you going to do when you are not flying?

If you are coming to New Zealand from overseas to train as a pilot, Nelson Tasman gives you plenty of opportunities to get out, meet people and explore. Spring is a particularly good time to be here, with events happening across the region and the weather getting better for getting outside.

Here are a few things you can check out while you are learning to fly at Nelson Aviation College.

Nelson Arts Festival

22 October to 1 November 2026

Once you have finished your flying for the day, you could do a lot worse than heading into Nelson for the Arts Festival.

The Nelson Arts Festival brings together music, theatre, comedy, performances and other creative events across the city.

It is also a good way to experience a side of New Zealand that you probably will not see from an aircraft.

Grab a few friends from the college, pick something that looks interesting and head into town.

You do not need to know anything about theatre or the arts. Half the fun is discovering something completely new.

Coppermine Bike Festival

26 September 2026

Nelson Tasman is a pretty good place to be if you like bikes.

The Coppermine Bike Festival is held around Coppermine Saddle and is another opportunity to get out and experience the region rather than spending your entire weekend studying aviation theory.

The wider Nelson Tasman region has an extensive network of mountain biking and cycling trails, so there is plenty to explore whether you are seriously into riding or just fancy giving it a go.

And if you have spent the week sitting in a classroom or aircraft, getting outside is probably not a bad idea.

For international students, events like this are a good opportunity to meet people outside your usual group and get involved in the local community.

You might be arriving in New Zealand primarily to become a pilot, but getting involved in things happening around you is a big part of making the most of your time here.

Go exploring

The best thing about learning to fly in Nelson might not actually be an organised event.

It might be having a free Saturday and deciding to see where you end up.

Nelson Tasman is surrounded by mountains, beaches, rivers and walking tracks, with plenty of places to explore within easy reach of Nelson.

You can spend a morning at the beach, head out for a hike, go mountain biking, explore the cafés and shops around Nelson, or jump in the car and head towards Motueka, Kaiteriteri or further into the region.

If you have a few days free, there are even bigger adventures to be had.

And for aviation students, there is something pretty cool about getting to know the landscape from both the ground and the air.

Find your new favourite spot

One of the best parts of learning to fly overseas is that your life is not limited to the flight school. You will have new places to discover, new people to meet and a whole region to explore between training sessions.

Maybe that means finding a favourite coffee spot in Nelson. Maybe it means spending your weekend mountain biking. Maybe it is a beach you keep going back to, a hiking track you discover with your friends or a random local event you would never have found back home.

Those experiences become part of your time in New Zealand just as much as your flying does. Come to Nelson to learn to fly. Stay for the weekends.

For international students, choosing a flight school is also choosing where you are going to spend a significant part of your life.

Nelson Aviation College allows you to focus on your pilot training while having the Nelson Tasman region right on your doorstep.

When you are in the air, you are learning to fly. When you are on the ground, there is a whole region waiting to be explored.

And with spring bringing a packed calendar of events and plenty of opportunities to get outside, there is no shortage of things to do.
